I think it’s a fantastic idea, if proper planning is taken into account. Things like ipod connectors and reliable maps are essential. I love my mom. I love her enough to know that I should never spend 10 solid hours in a silent car with her. I failed in the proper planning department. We have somehow managed to find humor in the most intense conditions. Its 100 degrees outside, I hate air conditioning and she hates humid wind in her face. We tried being creative, and discovering pictures in the bug splattered windshield. I am tired of sunflower seeds, and our radio doesn’t seem to play anything other than backyard country tunes. An hour of our trip was spent laughing at how we could barely make out the lyrics in most of the songs that were playing on repeat. That was only funny for so long, before our tone deaf vocals gave me a headache. I have an ipod but somehow every gas station has sold out of their auxiliary cables, and there are only so many topics two people can tackle in 600 miles. By hour 7, all I can think about is why on earth she needs to drive with two feet in an automatic vehicle (it has made me crazy since I was a little girl), and all she can do is say the name of a town we passed called “Mabelvale” with every accent imaginable.
